I like music, long walks on the beach, and poking dead things with a stick.

 2 am – One Thing

This is the song I’ve heard the most complaints about, in recent memory, for being overplayed on the radio. Strangely (or perhaps not, who knows?), I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of hearing it. I bought the CD on the strength of this song (I’m only batting about .333 for doing that), and was pleased that nearly half of the songs were pretty darned enjoyable. These guys definitely know how to craft a good song. But I’m really glad they changed the band name from Rainbow Butt Monkeys, because I can’t imagine admitting I bought a CD by a band with that name.

 1:30 am – 100 Years

I’ve blogged about this song before — in fact, it’s by far the reason I get traffic to my site! Well over half of the non-regulars who reach this blog get here from a search engine after looking for lyrics to this song. Most of them don’t post a comment, but that entry still has far more comments than any other. I know this song has touched thousands of people, and some of them in many of the same ways it’s touched me.

It still prompts a bittersweet smile. It still makes my eyes well up. It still reminds me of how I was at 15, how I wished I could be, and how the best of what I wanted then has mostly come to pass now. I have wonderful friends, cherished lovers, terrific kids, and sometimes I’m still astonished at how I’m happier than I ever dreamt I could be. It still helps me believe in the future without losing my connection to the past.

1 am – Everything You Want

If this isn’t quite the melancholy little ditty…

Anyway, I really like the band name, Vertical Horizon. It may have absolutely nothing to do with space travel, but the first time I heard it, I thought to myself that that’s the only place that a vertical horizon would be practical — in the cold depths of space. Perhaps I read too much military sci-fi.

 12:30 am – Poison

My beloved Geoffrey is almost maniacally fond of Alice Cooper. He even sat next to him on a plane flight once — back when he was a little kid who didn’t know anything about who Alice Cooper was (Geoffrey’s mom pronounced him “a very nice man”). I had barely heard of the man before I got involved with Geoffrey, and realized the extent of his fanhood. And saw his collection of CDs. And action figures. Et cetera.

All I can say is, I’m glad the Alice Cooper Xmas tree ornament is purple.

 12 midnight – Inside Out

Coming down the home stretch, only six hours to go! So of course I had to blog about an Eve 6 song.

This is a really special love song, which –

What do you mean, it’s not a love song? Of course it is.

Yes, I know the lyrics talk about putting your heart in a blender …technically …but overall, the gist of it is definitely a love song.

Yeah, I see the line that says “then I’m through with you,” but, really, it’s actually a love song.

Well, if you’d just understand that… uhm. Well.

Maybe you had to be there.

 11:30 pm – Closing Time

I heard somewhere that this song was written by a bandmember who was expecting a child, and it was an allegory of birth. I’m not sure whether I believe that or not; it still sounds like a pub song to me.

 11 pm – Tubthumping

There must be some kind of law in the universe that a song with an absolutely nonsensical title, by a band with an absolutely nonsensical name, must never actually be any good, but only liked by total weirdos who listen to music with lyrics involving souls kept in birdcages or some such idiocy. (Please do not make cranky comments about this unless your name is Lyse, since that teasing is aimed at her.)

But there are always exceptions.

10:30 pm – I’ll Be There For You

This is all Lyse‘s fault. She made me watch Friends, and she’s always been such a wonderful friend that I actually started liking this song. Damned catchy tune, I must admit.

10 pm – Truly Madly Deeply

Yay, it’s a happy song!

Settle in, kidlets, and Auntie Lil will tell you a fairy tale. *clears throat* Once upon a time, there was a sad lady. She had been cruelly dumped by Mr. MNMSICDYFAWTWL, and she whiled away her days listening to Angry Chick Music. Then one day, she got a new job, and on her way to the manager’s office to fill out her paperwork, she saw a man. “Oh. My. Heavens.” she thought. “He is totally yummy …I want that.” But she didn’t say anything; she just smiled. The man smiled back — he was a friendly sort. Over the next couple of months, the sad lady listened to less and less Angry Chick Music, and more and more I’m A Grrrl music! One weekend, she found herself at the same camping trip as the friendly man. They realized they were both in pretty rotten moods, and decided to see if the old saying was true that misery loves company. Misery loved company so much, that misery ended up moving in with company that very same week! And this was “their song” –

 9:30 pm – Breakfast at Tiffany’s

This is another one-hit wonder. It’s aggravating when you get really excited about a band’s debut, and they never make a second splash worthy of any notice. Anymore, I don’t even bother to find a song appealing unless it’s at least the band’s second hit. But when I do discover an already-established band with a couple of albums under their belt, I get pretty excited. (Currently, I’m holding out high hopes for My Chemical Romance.)
