This is all the fault of my Number One Internet Fanboy.

IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?
So, here’s how it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc)
2. Put it on shuffle
3. Press play
4. For every question, type the song that’s playing (feel free to annotate, since snarky commentary is half the fun)
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
6. Don’t lie and try to pretend that you’re cool…

Opening credits: “The Herald’s Creed,” Heather Alexander — Yeah, I’m a fangirl. And a Herald. No, really. I fulfilled all the requirements. Why else would I have a Hawkbrother feather on my arm, which goes with the shield of Valdemar on my beloved’s arm?

Waking up: “Wherever You Will Go,” The Calling — I’ve never figured out if this was a love song to a lover, a promise to a child, or an oath from beyond the grave. Or maybe all of them. Anyway, it nicely represents my tendency toward tenacity.

First day of school: “Islands in the Stream,” Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton — Yeah, I got nothing here. Okay, here’s a theory: I always felt isolated as a child. Might be why I spent the first 3 decades or so of my life trying so hard to belong. And mostly failing. *shrug*

Falling in love: “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” Green Day — I met my first love in the month of September. Other than that, I can’t think of how this song relates…aside from the lines, “The innocent can never last” and “Twenty years has gone so fast.” And I love the way the song starts out so softly, with very little accompaniment, and then the music just crashes in strongly and beautifully about halfway through.

Love scene: “Scotty Doesn’t Know (Euro Mix),” MC Jeffsky featuring Igor — This probably says something about my really awful behavior toward most of my boyfriends (okay, and husbands) when I was younger. Yeah, I was a bad, bad girl. Never in Europe, though.

Breaking up: “Pushing Me Away,” Linkin Park — “I’ve tried, like you, to do everything you wanted to / This is the last time I’ll take the blame, for the sake of being with you” … and … “The sacrifice of hiding in a lie, the sacrifice is never knowing / Why I never walked away, why I played myself this way” Yeah.

Life is good: “the middle,” Jimmy Eat World — This song used to make me cringe. Now it makes me dance. So, is all good.

Mental Breakdown: “Release Me,” Wilson Phillips — “I’m not going back to you anymore / Finally my weakened heart is healing though very slow.” Not entirely appropriate, but then again there were a few obsessive bits in my life. Bad times, that.

Driving: “All You Zombies,” The Hooters — Such a lovely song, and strangely enough, it does make a good driving song. Strong beat, aggressive theme, making a promise to those “people in high places” who want to slow you down. Nice metaphor.

Flashback: “Like A Prayer,” Madonna — It’s about God…and passion…and love…and power… Very pagan, really. *grin*

Getting back together: “We Belong,” Pat Benatar – Wow, this one FITS. I’ve always primarily thought of this song as being mine and Brenda’s, although it has fit other relationships in my life, too. But I’ve known Bren for (omg!) 25 years now, we have so much history, we’ve been through so much together.

Wedding: “The Other Side of Life,” The Moody Blues — Strangely fitting. It was my late husband’s favorite band, one of his favorite songs, and I suppose you could say he now is on the other side of life. “So take your share of the gifts that are there / They all belong to you / And come what may, at the break of each day / We all begin anew once more, we all begin anew.”

Birth of Child: “Xena Warrior Princess Theme Song,” Xena Soundtrack — I shit you not. Don’t know if this is a reflection on my eldest child, or the fact that I went through twenty-two hours of labor to bring her into the world. If that doesn’t qualify as warrior-related, I don’t know what does.

Final Battle: “Take On Me,” a-ha — If you’ve seen the video, you know it fits. Kinda.

Death Scene: “Dream On,” Aerosmith — Just. Entirely. Awesome.

Funeral song: “Draw the Circle,” Meg Davis — Another fangirl song. Very pagan, and nicely fitting. “Draw the circle ‘tween two worlds, Celestial fire to cleanse the girl / One to watch, and one to pray, and two to bear her soul away / The moon is every woman’s friend, to her your goodness condescend / And let this night, in visions see, the emblems of our destiny.”

End Credits: “Invincible (Theme from Legend of Billie Jean),” Pat Benatar — I’ve loved (and taken to heart) this song from the first time I heard it, when I was maybe 16. Of course, since I started reading military sci-fi, I can’t hear this song without thinking of killing Posleen. *grin* But yeah, this is one of the songs that most speaks to me.

This may help explain why I have been so enamored of McCain/Palin. The more I think about it, the more sense it makes…

Today at work, Mz. Sensitivity (overbearingly-liberal fruit-nut hippie bint who likes to think she’s a highly evolved Buddhist, or some such batshit) announced that if she had to work on Xmas, she wanted to shoot herself in the head. I was THIS -><- close to replying (and yes, I could have done it with a straight face...a somber one, even!), “Ah, like my husband did.” Just to watch her squirm. (Yes, Virginia, I am an Evil Bitch at heart. One who’s been making Dead Husband jokes since 1993.)

I do not understand steampunk. At least two ladies of my acquaintance are pretty darned interested in it, and I just don’t get it. (Nor do I really want to, so please don’t bother with the well-meant explanations. To me, it’s like goth or anime or Civil War re-creation or certain unusual religions: some of it looks cool, and I might find bits of it entertaining, but it’s not my style and I don’t comprehend the appeal.)

And now for the important stuff:

And this is really nothing more than a typing speed test (because we all memorized this in third grade, right?):

I named 9 planets in 30 seconds

This one was harder than it looked. At least one of the answers was something that nobody who wasn’t a doctor would probably get right. And remember that both genders count:

I named 17 organs in 4 minutes!

Not sure I agree with brown. But hey, still interesting:

Your rainbow is shaded brown and indigo.

What is says about you: You are a proud person. You appreciate the roughness of nature. Friends count on you for being honest and insightful. You feel closer to people when you understand their imperfections.

The only thing that keeps Wednesday from being totally awesome is that it’s a day I have to work. But other than that, it’s always been one of my sentimental favorites.

Anyhow, I got a phone. It’s not purple like my spiffy old phone, and it’s not all that spiffy (it’s actually pretty beat up), but it does what phones are supposed to do (namely, provide me with the ability to text-message, since I hate talking on the phone). And it was free (after a $20 unlocking fee). I just have to get used to the fact that the menu layout is odd, and some of the buttons do entirely different things than I’m used to them doing. *sigh* At least the ringtones selection is pretty good, and the wallpaper is purple. I did lose a whole lot of phone numbers, though, so if you’re pretty sure I don’t have yours and you want me to have it, email it — or Twitter direct-send it — to me.

I also revamped my Google Reader. Until recently, I had a pretty wide variety of blogs on there, but living without a phone (and being a bit too busy for much Internetting) helped me reevaluate what really matters. Mostly family and friends! So I got rid of all the blogs on my reader that weren’t people I’ve actually met in real life, except for 3 people: Orson Scott Card’s column, and a couple of Very Interesting and Entertaining gunblogs.

And now for a nifty meme, compliments of The Breda Fallacy:

The things I’ve done are in bold and my commentary is in parentheses.

1. Started your own blog. (And this isn’t the first one. Hell, this isn’t even the third one!)
2. Slept under the stars. (Q: How many SCAdians does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: SCAdians don’t screw in lightbulbs; they screw in the woods!)
3. Played in a band.
4. Visited Hawaii. (I’m thinking nearly half my childhood there counts. Just a wee bit.)
5. Watched a meteor shower.
6. Given more than you can afford to charity.
7. Been to Disneyland. (I was dragged there at age 15. I hated Disney even when I was 5, mind you.)
8. Climbed a mountain. (Mt. Freakin’ Tabor, baby! All 630 feet of it!)
9. Held a praying mantis. (Eeeeew!!!)
10. Sang a solo. (Yes, I once got drunk enough for karaoke.)
11. Bungee jumped. (Wheeeee!)
12. Visited Paris.
13. Watched a lightning storm at sea.
14. Taught yourself an art from scratch. (If crocheting counts.)
15. Adopted a child. (32 total hours of labor in TWO natural childbirths. Hmph.)
16. Had food poisoning. (Did you know that an hour of violent vomiting can make you miscarry? I didn’t, until then.)
17. Walked to the top of the Statue of Liberty.
18. Grown your own vegetables. (They were pathetically-teensy carrots and beans and pumpkins, but I grew the damned things…)
19. Seen the Mona Lisa in France.
20. Slept on an overnight train.
21. Had a pillow fight.
22. Hitch hiked. (I used to pick up hitchhikers, too. Ah, the naivety of youth…)
23. Taken a sick day when you’re not ill. (Hells yes.)
24. Built a snow fort.
25. Held a lamb. (I’ve held babies of at least a couple dozen different species, including goats, but not lambs. Yet.)
26. Gone skinny dipping. (Tee hee. More SCAdian shenanigans.)
27. Run a marathon. (I don’t walk 26 blocks if I can avoid it; I’m sure as hell not running 26 miles!!!)
28. Ridden in a gondola in Venice.
29. Seen a total eclipse.
30. Watched a sunrise or sunset.
31. Hit a home run.
32. Been on a cruise. (Trapped on a boat with a bunch of strangers? No way in hell — unless it’s a cruise thrown by Powell’s.)
33. Seen Niagara Falls in person.
34. Visited the birthplace of your ancestors. (Well, I’ve been to Oklahoma, and a pair of my great-grandparents were born there, but I’m guessing this means a more “Old World” type of answer unless you’re of Native American heritage.)
35. Seen an Amish community.
36. Taught yourself a new language. (I’m pretty sure learning to say, “Give me all your chocolate!” in Klingon when I was 19 doesn’t count.)
37. Had enough money to be truly satisfied.
38. Seen the Leaning Tower of Pisa in person.
39. Gone rock (wall) climbing.
40. Seen Michelangelo’s David.
41. Sung karaoke. (*sigh*)
42. Seen Old Faithful geyser erupt. (This may have happened when I was a wee tot, but I don’t remember. The bear tracks and our destroyed cooler at the camping site were pretty memorable, however.)
43. Bought a stranger a meal at a restaurant.
44. Visited Africa.
45. Walked on a beach by moonlight. (This contributed greatly to my choice of religion, actually.)
46. Been transported in an ambulance.
47. Had your portrait painted/drawn. (Technically a character based on me, but still…)
48. Gone deep sea fishing.
49. Seen the Sistine Chapel in person.
50. Been to the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
51. Gone scuba diving or snorkeling.
52. Kissed in the rain. (I live in Oregon. You don’t kiss in the rain, you don’t kiss.)
53. Played in the mud. (It may be difficult for some to believe, but I was once a world-class mudpie-maker.)
54. Gone to a drive-in theater. (That’s all we had in Hawaii. Until I was 9 and we moved to Oregon, I didn’t even know what a movie theater was!)
55. Been in a movie. (Not unless home videos count.)
56. Visited the Great Wall of China.
57. Started a business.
58. Taken a martial arts class.
59. Visited Russia.
60. Served at a soup kitchen. (I volunteered at the Oregon Food Bank…but didn’t actually meet any hungry people, so probably doesn’t count.)
61. Sold Girl Scout Cookies. (As a Brownie, as a Junior, and as a Girl Scout Mom.)
62. Gone whale watching.
63. Got flowers for no reason. (Because he wasn’t smart enough to bring me something I could eat or read.)
64. Donated blood, platelets or plasma. (Got my Red Cross gallon pin! Before 9-11, mind you.)
65. Gone sky diving.
66. Visited a Nazi concentration camp. (Creepy and morbid much?!)
67. Bounced a check.
68. Flown in a helicopter.
69. Saved a favorite childhood toy. (I ritually trashed all my childhood toys when I turned 14. I do have some of my original childhood books, the nice hardcover copies my grandparents gave me.)
70. Visited the Lincoln Memorial.
71. Eaten caviar. (It was icky.)
72. Pieced a quilt. (SEWED BY HAND. Look at those stitches!!! Damnit.)
73. Stood in Times Square.
74. Toured the Everglades. (Ohmigawd, no! There are gators there!)
75. Been fired from a job.
76. Seen the Changing of the Guard in London.
77. Broken a bone. (Cracked my nose, but didn’t actually break it. Gymnastics accident. Age 13.)
78. Been on a speeding motorcycle. (Something about long-haired boys on bikes…*swoon*)
79. Seen the Grand Canyon in person.
80. Published a book.
81. Visited the Vatican.
82. Bought a brand new car. (Only a brand new scooter.)
83. Walked in Jerusalem.
84. Had your picture in the newspaper. (It was next to a Letter to the Editor I wrote.)
85. Read the entire Bible. (I’ve read tons more of it than I would guess most Wiccans have, but not the whole blasted thing.)
86. Visited the White House. (The Capitol Building, yes. Not the White House.)
87. Killed and prepared an animal for eating. (Fish. Crawdads. No higher life-forms, yet.)
88. Had chickenpox. (I gave it to my sister for Christmas in 1974!)
89. Saved someone’s life. (Not unless you count restraining myself from slaughtering my children. Countless times.)
90. Sat on a jury.
91. Met someone famous. (Several authors, at book signings. And actors, at Trek cons…but neveryoumind about that.)
92. Joined a book club. (Currently belong to one, even.)
93. Lost a loved one. (That would be the basis for all my dead husband jokes.)
94. Had a baby. (Twice. Not the same kid twice, obviously. And OW!)
95. Seen the Alamo in person.
96. Swam in the Great Salt Lake.
97. Been involved in a lawsuit.
98. Owned a cell phone. (Not only that, but have worked for Nextel, Qwest Wireless, and AT&T Wireless. Sad but true.)
99. Been stung by a bee. (My mom has this awesome pic of me at age 1, squatting down to give a rain puddle a close look, about 30 seconds before I got my first bee sting. On the back of my fat little toddler thigh.)
100. Read an entire book in one day. (I do this on a nearly-daily basis. Kind of explains the 12 bookshelves that completely fill the computer room…I guess we should start calling it the library.)

I don’t have an arthritic knee, yesterday’s doctor’s visit determined. Just tendonitis. Anyway, here’s a survey, compliments of Mari.

1. Do you like blue cheese?
No.

2. Have you ever smoked?
Yes, but I’ve never been on fire.

3. Do you own a gun?
No — the guns in the house are Geoffrey’s. I do, however, own a battle axe (I like guns, but my battle axe will never go off accidentally while I’m cleaning it).

4. What flavor Kool Aid was your favorite?
Grape – duh!!!

5. Do you get nervous before doctor appointments?
All of it

12. Do you have A.D.D.?
No, I just have a deep need to multi-task constantly.

My nervous tic of picking at my cuticles.

14. Middle name?
Elizabeth

1) I hate sweating
Water, iced tea, peppermint white mocha

19. Favorite place to be?
Home

20. How did you bring in the new year?
Same as every year, reading a book or watching a DVD until 11:55pm then turning to Dick Clark’s Rockin Eve to watch the ball drop (and laugh at the fools freezing their butts off in Times Square)

21. Where would you like to go?
The Oregon Vortex

22. Name three people who will complete this?
Erm, I haven’t the foggiest.

27. Favorite color?
Same as it’s been for the last 35 years — PURPLE

28. Would you be a pirate?
No. Pirates are stupid. And annoying.

29. What songs do you sing in the shower?
I don’t sing in the shower, I sing while I’m cleaning the kitchen.

30. Favorite Girl’s Name?

34. What do you drive?
A craptastic 1992 Subaru tan station wagon POS with a bashed-in right corner, and (when the fraking dealer gets my goram battery back in stock) an adorable rasperry TNT Venice motor-scooter

35. Worst injury you’ve ever had?
Broken nose & concussion from a gymnastics accident when I was 13, that involved my face hitting the steel crossbar under the vault at high speed (but damn, I sure learned what “tuck and roll” means!!!)

36. Do you love where you live?
Not anymore. Uppity hippies & entitle-ist bicyclists have made Portland suck.

2? There’s one in the front room, and possibly one in Jordan’s room. I don’t look in there. The floor has disappeared and the tarantula might eat me.

38. Who is your loudest friend?
Lyse? Probably Lyse.

39. Do you have any pets?
OMG, do I have pets! 3 cats, 1 bunny, 1 boa constrictor, 1 bearded dragon lizard, 1 hamster (nasty little thing), and 1 gerbil who is the most expensive gerbil outside of a cloning laboratory

40. Does someone have a crush on you?
Only the creepy security-desk guy at my work. He’s apparently the only straight male in the building who knows my name.

41. Your favorite book(s)? right now?
“The Golden Helix” by Theodore Sturgeon — Classic sci-fi rocks the best! MUST READ!!!!

42. Do you collect anything?
Coffee mugs with snarky sayings, taglines, books…gee, I’m seeing a pattern here. They all involve words.

43. Favorite Sports Team?
I am not a team player. That’s why I love gymnastics.

44. What song do you want played at your funeral?
I’d say “Scotty Doesn’t Know” but nobody would quite understand why. How about “I’ll Be There” by Escape Club. It’s a very Pagan song, and so fraking beautiful that I bawled my eyes out the first time I heard it. And “100 Years” by Five For Fighting. And “Solsbury Hill” by Peter Gabriel, and “We Belong” by Pat Benatar. Oh, and I want a dance number just like the one in the “Helena” video by My Chemical Romance (I especially like the umbrella dancers at the end!). And then some male hula fire-dancers (real Polynesian guys, mind you) doing a really sexy war dance to South Pacific drums, and then someone has to sing “Siúil A Rún” with Uilleann pipes accompanying. Oh, and for the big finale, Josh Groban will sing “Oceano”. In person.

Ok, maybe no hula fire-dancers. We wouldn’t want it to be gaudy.

42 — The Answer

Here’s a silly questionnaire meme that I got from Mari, so I can at least post something.

1. Name one person who made you smile today?
Geoffrey — he said that before he got out of bed to go to work, I was very snuggly & warm. (As I was mostly asleep, I don’t remember this…but apparently I do it a lot.)

2. What were you doing at 8 this morning?
Sleeping!

3. What were you doing 15 minutes ago?
Filling up the cat food dishes because Hasani was yowling like he was starving (brainless, he is)

4. What should you be doing now?
Laundry

5. What is the last thing you said aloud?
“Hasani, GET DOWN!” (He had jumped to the top of the shutters in the window of my computer room, about 6 feet off the floor.)

7. What was the last thing you bought?
I don’t remember

8. What was a gift you received for your last birthday?
Several hours of peace & quiet (the gift I wanted most)

9. What did you do for New Year’s?

16. Do you want to cut your hair?
I’m growing it out, so the only cutting it gets is to trim the back while the front catches up…currently it looks like a really nice bob, sort of Jodie Foster-ish, with the back only an inch or so longer than the front

17. Are you over the age of 25?
I have an 18-year-old daughter, what does that tell you?

Depends on the situation, but usually I talk too much…

The what?

No. Weird question.

Just my late husband. Another weird question.

22. Do you make up your own words?
Angst — my daughter, but now that she’s an adult, she can be my friend too

Some random survey-taker whose voicemail I erased unanswered

Ew.

A huge plate of scrambled eggs and a couple pieces of toast with marionberry jam

No. Nor will I.

34. Do you have work tomorrow?
There’s work to be done everyday.

Lots of marriages are in my future! Yes… Two someones as a matter of fact…

A few, which I’m not sharing, thanks.

Most of the time.

41. When was the last time you used a skateboard?
I don’t believe I’ve ever been on a skateboard (watching my sister crash a lot when she had one at age 7 helped me avoid interest in them)

42. What is the best movie you’ve seen in the past two weeks?
Hard Candy was pretty damned intense…after reviewing my Netflix queue, it appears the only other movie I’ve seen within the last 2 weeks was Stick It, which was adorable but not exactly great cinema. So yeah, we’ll go with Hard Candy.
