Actually, I don’t think Sting’s done anything “golden oldie”-worthy in the last few years; some of his earlier stuff is, to be sure, but I don’t exactly see “Desert Rain” playing on an oldies station thirty years from now. (Much though I like the song, mind you.) I’d bet more on something like “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free,” or maybe “We’ll Be Together.”

The problem is, the stuff that’s “golden oldie” tends to be the stuff that was overplayed on the radio back when it originally came out. Which means my vote is for that incredibly annoying Coldplay song, “Clocks.” I’ll bet good money that it’ll be on a “classics” compilation CD/chip/crystal/whatever thirty years from now.

Oh, and Smashmouth’s “All Star.” Which, at least, isn’t nearly as bad of a song.

well, i’m going to disagree about the sting songs, karel. “we’ll be together” is from 1988 and “set them free” is from 1984, but neither will be oldies in the true sense … unfortunately. sting’s only released 2 albums (non-compliation) in the past 5 years, and i suspect that it will probably be “brand new day” that makes the oldies chart.

i think that an oldie will probably be something more hip-hop. i don’t know why…

hrm… i would say the things that were in the charts of 2000 like:

higher – creed

kryptonite – 3 doors down

you sang to me – marc anthony

if it’s in the charts, it will make it (at least through a vh1 “i love the 00s” show)
